There was a huge amount of the most personal family, employment and social information on there - a gift for identity thieves. He contacted her and she explained that she'd asked her son to transfer all the information to a new machine - he'd done that but had failed to wipe the old one! Seems as if that's what happened here. The laptop was deemed surplus to requirements and the hard drive should have been wiped before being sold on eBay.
