SOUTHEND Hospital is urging former patients to return mobility aids they no longer need.

The rehab team at the hospital is asking for any unused walking sticks, crutches and wheelchairs to be passed back to the hospital to save money.

Sue Hudson, governance facilitator in the rehabilitation department, said: “We order 100 walking sticks and 100 crutches every month and spend around £30,000 a year on these aids.

“Many of these go missing on a regular basis and if we get them back we can reuse them quite easily.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have them to bring them back to the rehab department with no questions asked.

“When they are returned, we clean them and check them over to ensure they are still serviceable, then they can be issued to other patients.”

She also appealed for the return of a number of missing hospital wheelchairs.
