A SPONSORED walk has raised more than £2,500 for leukaemia patients.

The Southend Leukaemia Unit Group Supporters, better known as SLUGS, organised the seven mile walk and provided entertainment on Southend seafront to raise cash for those at Southend Hospital.

The walkers went from Leigh station to Adventure Island and back, while the Dreamweavers entertained the public with their country music and Karima Dance performed a belly dance. As ongoing supporters of the hospital, all singers and dancers gave their time free of charge.

SLUGS chairman Eileen Benwell said: "SLUGS is delighted to announce that the sum of £682.36 was raised from the collection at the charity seafront walk and we hope to raise an additional £2,000 from the sponsored walk.

“We would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed so generously to this effort which, as always, will be put towards the purchase of further medical equipment.”
