Pub’s £10,000 charity effort

PUB regulars and staff in Leigh have raised £10,000 for a cancer charity.

World Cup football legend Martin Peters visited the Broker, in Leigh Road, to collect the cheque on behalf of Orchid Cancer Appeal for male specific cancers.

Peters, a member of the 1966 World Cup-winning England team, chatted with regulars, signed shirts and posed for photos with fans.

Pub owner Alan Gloyne, 63, was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago and is still undergoing treatment.

As a result, his family decided to support the charity and the research it funds into prostate cancer.

Over 18 months, the pub held events including jumble sales, raffles and quiz nights to raise the £10,000.

Alan’s wife, Sheila said: “We wanted to raise awareness of the charity and also the importance of men checking themselves. They tend not to look after themselves, but if prostate cancer is caught early enough there’s a better chance of surviving. Alan was told he had 18 months and he’s still here.

“Men tend to ignore symptoms and it’s vital they are aware.”
