THURROCK T-Birds are ready for a double dose of Twickenham on Sunday.

Thurrock’s second team face Sheffield Tigers in the Papa John’s Cup at the home of English rugby at 1pm.

And, just four hours later, the first team will take to the field to take on Cheltenham Tigers in the Championship Cup final, much to the delight of director of rugby Dean White.

“I’m really looking forward to the day and it will be an historic one for our club,” said White.

“I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved as a squad.

“I set the coaches targets at the start of the season and we have exceeded those.

“To get two league titles is an achievement on its own but to also get both teams at Twickenham on the same day is absolutely amazing.

“I’m so proud of the players and what they have achieved.”

But the success has been achieved after plenty of hard work and planning.

“We sat down at Christmas and had a real honest conversation,” said White.

“We planned our way to this stage.

“I asked them to just concentrate on ourselves and to trust our processes but they have done that and more.

“The players have brought in to what we have asked and they have been unbelievably committed throughout the season.”

And that spirit has played a huge part in this becoming a season to remember for White.

“I have been coaching the Thurrock T-Birds for more than 20 years and this has to be one of the best seasons I can remember,” said White.

“We have made history and everyone involved with the team has made this happen.”

But incredible strength in depth has also been key.

“We have recruited really well this season, in terms of numbers and quality,” said White.

“The coaches deliver top quality sessions, and the set-up attracts players.

“I strongly believe that we have the best women’s set-up outside of the Premiership, with six coaches, two physios, a commercial manager, team manager, video analyst and the full support of our club.

“When new players come to a session, they tend to stay, this is a great sign.

“We also have players that travel over two hours each way for training and games, which is a huge commitment.

“But we are always looking at recruiting and can cover all standards, from new/beginners to Premiership standard players.

“With our links to Prem Clubs Harlequins and Ealing, the pathway is open for our players to push on to full time contracts.

“We currently have three dual registered players at Quins and two at Ealing but this will also grow over the summer pre season.”
