Southend Council looks for new head of climate change

The job role has been advertised with a whopping salary of up to £69,000.

The successful candidate will be challenged to design and deliver climate related projects across a range of areas including housing, biodiversity, open spaces, seafront, waste and recycling and transport.

The role will also involve leading important reviews of council policies to ensure sustainability is embedded.

The head of climate change will work alongside stakeholders, partners and businesses to ensure that both the council and its relationships across the borough promote and deliver a “net zero future”.

It comes after the council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has vowed to become carbon neutral within the next decade.

Cabinet member for environment, Carole Mulroney said: “In 2019 we declared a climate emergency, committing to the development and delivery of radical policies to meet carbon neutrality by 2030.

“I am pleased that we are now looking to recruit a head of climate change who will lead on the delivery and strategic development of all aspects of climate change across the council and the borough to achieve a carbon neutral Southend by 2030 and develop and deliver our low carbon energy and sustainability strategy.

“The role will work with stakeholders, partners and businesses, ensuring that both our own activities as a council and our relationships across the borough promote and deliver a net zero future.

“This is an all-encompassing role, requiring a candidate able to lead, influence and inspire climate action and results, from policy and strategy development through to delivery.
