Spend or splurge, bring a sparkle to her eye with something special, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

If you normally mark Mother's Day with a sweet card and flowers, why not enhance a pretty bunch of blooms with a wine's fragrant bouquet?

After all, a classy label, bottle from a boutique winery, or a velvety red with promise is bound to please and feel like a treat.

From delicate florals, fruity top notes and intense accents, we've hand-picked six wines that would all make a suitably special toast to mummy dearest...

A little gem from family-owned Billecart-Salmon, who are celebrating their 200th anniversary. If you're inspired by the famous quote - "Champagne is the only wine that leaves women looking beautiful after drinking it" - then this is the champagne to put in her hand. Graceful strawberry aromas and a fresh, fruity palate fashion an everlasting love.

Tres chic, this champagne's calling card is its rich, aromatic style, with delicious toasty aromas and hints of hazelnuts and praline. With impressive depth and notes of peaches, apricots and dried almonds, it's delightfully fresh and a synergy of power and elegance.

3. Faldeos Nevados Torrontes 2017, Uco Valley, Argentina (£8.50, TheWineSociety.com)

Argentina's signature white grape is usually marked by generous florals, but top winemaker Susana Balbo has stamped this wine with her trademark fresh and citrusy character to produce a distinctive and refreshing style of torrontes. Expect a limey, juicy note and mixed spray of peach and grapefruit, with plenty of lemon zest and an attractive, lively finish.

4. Berry Bros & Rudd Sancerre 2016 by Domaine David Sautereau, France (£16.95, Berry Bros & Rudd)Echo: Undated Handout Photo of Berry Bros & Rudd Sancerre, France. See PA Feature DRINK Mothers Day. If you want to push the boat out and send 'Sancerre' wishes from a tiny appellation that's celebrated the world over, try this suave sauvignon blanc from the picturesque Loire Valley. Minerally and fresh on the nose, with gooseberry and nettly aromas, there's a wonderful balance between the grassy, citrusy flavours that are driven by fresh acidity on the flint-tinged finish.

5. Cimarosa Carmenere Reserva Privada 2015, Valle Central, Chile (£6.99, Lidl, in store only)

With its silky, velvety structure and tasty stream of plummy fruit studded with sweet spice, this smooth and aromatic carmenere feels much more luxurious than the price suggests. One of the highlights from Lidl's latest Wine Tour, this is a seductive South American that your mother won't want to share.

6. Warwick Estate First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Western Cape, South Africa (£9, Sainsbury's)

Aptly named, if you needed an excuse to reacquaint your(self or) mum with South African wines, then this deeply fruited red should be in the line-up. The wine offers a generous bouquet, with cedar wood and liquorice taking centre stage. Soft and fruity with plenty of blackberry, dark cherry and toasty oak, it also earns brownie points for being keenly priced.

7. RedHeads The Corroboree Shiraz 2015, Barossa, Australia (£14.99, laithwaites.co.uk)

An opulent shiraz, with a wealth of crushed blackberry fruit that collides beautifully with dark cherries and spice-laced cassis, this wine is lushly perfumed, with a heady array of jammy black fruits backed by hints of sandalwood and mint on the deep, long finish. A jazzy label, too.
