IT has been a week of television shocks for me.

First of all, the new Geri Halliwell Saturday night talent show is actually quite good.

And then we find out Brendan Cole has been ditched from Strictly.

What is going on ? When Lorraine teased viewers with “big news” just before an interview with Cole on Tuesday morning I dismissed it as just being a red herring to get us to tune back in - but then the bombshell was dropped. Poor Brendan seemed genuinely choked up.

Lorraine was unsure if she should console or really push him so he would actually start sobbing.

He didn’t seem too far from it. After 15 years, making it the show it was and adding to the winning formula, in my opinion, he would be right to feel a bit miffed.

Maybe he was too confrontational? but doesn’t that make it better television?

We may never know they truth, the powers that be remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind the decision but as a long-term Strictly fan, I will miss him.

Admittedly, the string of fairly dud partners he has been gifted over the past few years may have been a huge hint.

I know they don’t totally know who will shine but giving him someone with zero dance training (Charlotte Hawkings/Jo Wood) is a clue as opposed to Debbie McGee who ran her own dance school at one time.

Over the years the dancers have become as well-known as the celebs and are often as good television so I hope they don’t regret their decision.

But back to current Saturday night entertainment, specifically All Together Now which sees singers attempt to get 100 people to stand up and join in with them.

The 100 people are chosen from all aspects of the music biz - from former Spice Girl Geri, to tribute acts, singing teachers, drag acts, producers and even a singing dentist who was a social network sensation.

Keeping things light is comedian Rob Beckett, who interviews the 100 as to why they stayed sitting or got up and boogied on down.

It is clear this is as much about fun as it is technique - and very much down to choosing a brilliant song and delivering it well.

Sometimes it is hard to find things you can all sit down and watch as a family and this is perfect for everyone.

I have to admit me and the 11-year-old actually got up as well when the last chap smashed it with Proud Mary and achieved the ultimate accolade of getting all 100 to stand up.

I don’t bother doing that when Strictly is on !
