SENIOR politicians have rallied around their leader after it emerged she faced a fight to retain control.

Pam Challis, who has been Tory leader of Castle Point Council for ten years, faces a fight against Benfleet councillor Bill Sharp for the leadership of the party.

Mr Sharp has been put forward as a challenger for the Conservative association vote tomorrow after receiving backing from Tory backbenchers.

Mrs Challis has refused to comment on the challenge, telling the Echo at that it was a “private party matter” that she wouldn’t discuss in public.

Her cabinet colleagues have now spoke up in support of her.

Deputy leader and councillor responsible for finance, Jeffrey Stanley, said: “Pam Challis has been the most successful leader of the council for over ten years and is held in wide respect by many inside and outside the council.

“There’s always rumours of a challenge, but there is no reason at all why there should be a challenge against her because she is such a good leader and we are lucky to have her.”

Ray Howard, councillor responsible for waste, floods and water management, added: “We do live in a democracy and it’s their prerogative if someone feels they want to put themselves forward.

“I had heard there was this chance, but I don’t get involved with that. I will listen to what the debate’s all about but I think Pam Challis has got a difficult job and quite frankly, it’s the cabinet’s duty to support her.”
