RESIDENTS had to be evacuated after a kebab shop caught fire.
Fire crews in three engines were called to Golden Cross in Rectory Road, Rochford, at about 11.50pm on Saturday.
About 15 minutes later fire fighters reported the ground floor of the three floor property was heavily smoke-logged. Because the top two floors are used at living accommodation residents were evacuated as crews continued to tackle the fire.
Fire fighters from Southend and Hawkwell took an hour to extinguish the blaze and used a high pressure fan to clear the building of smoke.
There were no reported casualties.
