VILLAGERS now have a fitting place to remember those killed during the world wars thanks to a £34,250 grant from Basildon Council.

Over the past 70 years, the monument and remembrance garden in Ramsden Bellhouse has fallen into disrepair.

Residents set up a committee to find out if there was a need and expectation to replace what remained of the memorial and secured funding from the council.

Councillor Terri Sargent, councillor responsible for the environment and community, said: “It is fantastic to see residents getting together to take on a project for the local community, especially one dedicated to honouring the memory of our fallen soldiers and civilians from the First and Second World Wars.”

Richard Wellborne, chairman of Ramsden Bellhouse Parish Council, added: “For the first time in 70 years, the village once again has a visible focal point where the relatives and members of the community, young and old can, reflect on the sacrifices made.”
