In June 1940, five-year-old Grace Southgate, later Appleton, was evacuated from Southend to the village of Tibshelf, in Derbyshire.

She was billeted in the house of a miner, who she came to call Uncle Jack, and his wife, dubbed Auntie Flo.

After the Second World War, Grace remained in contact with the couple, who attended her wedding in 1957.

The bond that developed between Grace and Uncle Jack is clear from this picture.
