AIR conditioning, power sockets and wi-fi will be installed on more Greater Anglia trains as part of a major refurbishment programme.

The operator has announced ten of its class 321 trains, which operate on routes to Southend, Chelmsford, Witham, Braintree, Colchester, Clacton, Harwich and Ipswich, will be refitted.

New energy efficient lighting, flooring, ceiling panels and windows will also be fitted as part of the upgrade.

The latest upgrade follows the announcement of minor improvements to 40 other class 321 trains, including new seat covers and lighting.

It means 67 of the 94 class 321 trains which run across the Greater Anglia network will have been improved.

Greater Anglia managing director Jamie Burles said: “I am delighted we have been able to agree this major upgrade, transforming the customer environment on these carriages which are used by many thousands of our passengers every day.

“Customers will see a real step change in the quality of the on-train experience, to offer a better, more comfortable journey.

“We are pleased to have worked in partnership with Eversholt Rail and Wabtec Rail to agree this significant train upgrade programme.

“We will continue to improve service quality for the remainder of our franchise, building on the £35.5million programme of investment already announced."
