PLANS for a 12-lane bowling alley in an empty factory have been given the go-ahead by Rochford district councillors - against the views of their own officers.

Members of the development control committee felt the overall community benefit which could come to the village from the new leisure facility, on the Eldon Way industrial estate, Hockley, outweighed the loss of an industrial building.

The bowling lanes will be run by the owners of the successful CJs snooker club, which is already operating on the estate.

Deputy council leader Keith Hudson (Con, Hockley Central) said he was a strong supporter of the scheme, subject to certain safeguards.

He added: "My concern was to ensure there was proper soundproofing so the noise of the bowling alley would not have any effect on the residential properties in Bramerton Road. I know there have been worries about parking, but I do not think this is a problem.

The club has parking space available and there are other public spaces on the estate which are available in the evenings and at weekends."

Mr Hudson said there had been concerns about youngsters congregating in the area, adding: "I hope this is the sort of facility which they have been asking for and it will help to cut down problems in the town."

Heather Glynn (Con Hawkwell) who asked for the application to be considered by the committee, said: "I am delighted and amazed at the support shown by fellow members.

"We will have another facility in the centre of Hockley for youngsters, older people and families.

"Together with the snooker club, there will be an entertainment area there, which is needed in the village."

PC Steve Joynes of the Hockley community policing team, said: "We think it is a brilliant idea which will provide another facility for the youth of the area.

"Bowling is popular and it can be played by anyone of any age and any ability."

Craig Hubbard, of CJs snooker club, said he was delighted the plans had gone through after all the work which had gone on in preparing them.

He added: "If all goes well, then we aim to be open by September."
