HOME composting will be the focus of national Compost Awareness Week which starts on Sunday.

Basildon Council's recycling teams will be setting up in the fruit and vegetable aisles of supermarkets to urge residents to compost kitchen and garden waste.

It is estimated the average household could divert as much as 150kg of organic waste a year from landfills by using a compost bin.

Carly Cox, the council's recycling promotions officer, said all sorts of items could be composted.

She said: "Almost anything organic can be home composted - from fruit and vegetable peelings to egg shells, garden waste, shredded paper and cardboard.

Residents can buy a 220 litre compost bin for £8, a 330 litre bin for £10 or a 250 litre KOMP compost bin for £20, all including delivery.

Details are at www.recyclenow. com/compost or by calling 0845 0770757 for details.

Also, anyone buying a compost bin next week could win £100 of garden centre vouchers.
