THURROCK and Basildon College is scrapping courses in an effort to cut costs.
The cuts will force scores of students to go elsewhere and mean up to ten lecturers face losing their jobs at the embattled college, which has fought over the years to raise standards and improve its reputation.
The college, which has campuses in Nethermayne, Basildon, and Woodview, Grays, will scrap AS Levels, part-time language, performing arts, and GCSE maths and English courses in the new academic year. All staff affected have been sent letters warning their jobs are under threat.
Denise Fielding, principal, said: "Staff are our biggest asset. "There-fore, it's with much regret that we had to conclude that staffing reductions are inevitable."
