RAYLEIGH could soon have a new war memorial, as a result of plans revealed by the town council.
At the council's next meeting on Tuesday, members will be meeting representatives from the Royal British Legion to discuss the proposal.
Rayleigh currently lacks an official war memorial, although the town's British Legion Club was built after the First World War in memory of the fallen.
Rolls of honour for both world wars are on display outside the building and this is the spot where wreaths are laid every Remembrance Day.
The lych-gate at the entrance to Holy Trinity parish church in the High Street was later built as a memorial to those from the town who died in the Second World War.
Former town council chairman Tony Humphries is a strong supporter of the war memorial plan.
He said: "Compared to other towns, Rayleigh does not have a prominent war memorial.
"I would like to see if there is a way we could remedy this.
"There are some people who think the Martyrs Memorial in the High Street is actually a war memorial."
