TELL us about your favourite memory from childhood.

Winning my secondary school class prize of ten sailing lessons.

Back in the Fifties, schools in London were tough and strong on discipline, but we had a progressive headmaster who operated on a carrot-and-stick approach.

He introduced “top of the form” prizes to encourage and incentivise better academic performance. I won the choice of ten sport lessons and chose sailing.

M&Co – because my wife says so!

The view from Rayleigh Mount, nowblocked by overgrown trees.

What is your favourite thing about your town?

Holy Trinity Church, because it represents standing the test of time What is your happiest memory?

Taking part in the first Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 1996/1997.

To celebrate my 50th birthday in 1996 and my love of the sea, I took part in the race, which was organised by Sir Robin Knox Johnson.

I did the 7,000 mile stage from Seychelles to South Africa to Brazil and still think of it at least once a week.

This bi-annual race is still going and the latest started from Southend Pier on August Bank Holiday Monday. You can follow progress online daily.

What event most sticks out in your mind from living here?

I do not hold any affiliations with any political party, but I strongly believe in democracy and am dismayed with modern politics in general.

Of particular concern is local government implementing this culture on behalf of Central Government and not serving those that elect them locally.
