A SPOTTY caravan will provide shelter for teenage refugees in the Calais Jungle.

Leigh charity Side by Side Refugees held a pub quiz at the Sarah Moore, in Elm Road, raising more than £1,200.

With that money they bought three caravans with the idea of turning them into homes for migrants whose makeshift accommodation was demolished by French authorities a fortnight ago.

The plan can to fruition in under a week with Dottie, the first caravan, being towed out to Calais on Friday evening.

Volunteers spent last week cleaning, painting and stocking the mobile home with supplies.

Kat Keiffer-Wells, founder of the charity, praised the volunteers for their work.

She said: “It’s so important that these unaccompanied minors have somewhere to stay after their previous homes were destroyed.

“There’s a charity present in Calais called Jungle Canopy that is providing caravans for refugees and have been for some time.

“There is a desperate need for some decent shelter for them so we wanted to do something similar.

“We got three caravans from the money from the pub quiz and people have donated since so we’ve managed to get another two.

“Now it’s a case of doing them up, kitting them out and getting them over there.

“We’re really pleased with the first one, people have been so generous with donations to stock the caravans and our volunteers have worked really hard to do it up.”

The first caravan has been named Dottie and the second one will be christened Side by Side.

Dottie is kitted out with food, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, board games and even a cricket set.

Helen Stepney, who organised the pub quiz, added: “We’re so grateful to everyone who has donated so far.

“hopefully these caravans will make a real difference to the children in the camp.”

Side by Side would like to thank Earth Designs, Steppers Party Company, Toddler Sense, Home Maid Clean Company, Vidgeon Hair and Pure Indulgence for their donations to the pub quiz raffle.
