DEDICATED runners from across south Essex have raised thousands for worthy causes by taking on the London Marathon.

A combination of nervous first-timers and experienced veterans were among those who lined up for the start of the 26.2 mile race around the capital.

Dozens of runners were taking part to raise money for St Luke's Hospice, based in Basildon.

Kerry Chambers, sporting event fundraiser for the charity, was among the cheering crowds on the sidelines in London, handing out sweets to runners at the halfway point.

She said: "I would like to thank and congratulate our wonderful team of marathon runners for all of their hard work,

"We are extremely proud of each and every one of them – a massive thank you also to their sponsors for their generosity.

"It makes a real difference to the help we can give to our patients and local people who are living with and beyond life challenging illnesses’’

Kate Cammidge, from the Castle Point Joggers running clu,b went along to support the runners.

She added: “We had quite a few runners from our running club in the marathon this year.

“The atmosphere on the day was just tremendous and the crowd were amazing."
