BASILDON town centre came to a standstill as Christmas lights were switched on to mark the start of the festive season.
X-Factor star Che Chesterman appeared on stage alongside Basildon mayor David Harrison for the magical moment the button was pressed and the town came aglow.
Meanwhile, it was all smiles in the town centre while a pyrotechnics display lit up the skyline above streets teeming with families and a mini funfair.
Festive entertainment filled the Eastgate shopping centre.
In total, more than 70 different performers provided stilt-walking, balloon modelling, human statues and numerous acts of wacky comedy.
Eastgate centre manager Ian Clark said: “This was a fantastic day, the atmosphere within Eastgate being electric and our shoppers revelling in all the fun.
“All in all this was the perfect start to Christmas shopping at Eastgate and the town of Basildon”.
The main stage included entertainment from local groups as well as X Factor favourite Che Chesterman and the cast of this year’s pantomime from Towngate Theatre.
The switch-on, co-organised by Basildon Council, Basildon Town Centre Management, also featured local radio presenters who hosted proceedings. The event also included a Christmas parade and a visit from the big man himself, Father Christmas.
