A FREE event recognising how the law has made positive changes for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community will be held in Basildon nightclub Colors.

The vibrant event, supported by Basildon Council, will take place on Friday, February 17, from 6pm until 9.30pm.

It marks the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales and will recognise historic changes and laws which have made an impact.

The event will feature speeches by Terri Sargent, Basildon Council cabinet member for communities and environment, and Sgt Gina Denham, from Basildon’s community policing team, who will be speaking about her transgender journey.

Ms Denham, who has undergone gender reassignment surgery and is living life as a woman, said: “Up until 2014, if I wanted get a gender recognition certificate, I would have had to get my marriage annulled, because before then you couldn’t have a same-sex marriage in the church.

“I got married in a church in 1991. Fortunately, now the law has changed I am still married and can get my gender recognition certificate.

“That is a way in which the law has affected me.”

Terri Sargent added: “LGBT History Month is a chance to recognise the progress that has been made for lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality over the years, and to celebrate the people who have tirelessly campaigned for changes in law.

“However, we know there is much more to be done for LGBT equality and inclusivity. Basildon Council will work with its employees and communities to achieve this.”
