• A MAN who headbutted another man has been spared jail.

Jamie Langley, 27, of London Road, Westcliff, admitted assaulting his victim in Southend on May 12.

Southend Magistrates’ Court heard the attack was unprovoked and happened in a public place.

Langley was handed an 18-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He must also pay £100 compensation, £400 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Another man, Drew Marsh, 19, of Rookyards, Basildon, was handed a 12 month community order for his part in the assault.

He must pay £50 compensation, £400 costs, and an £85 victim surcharge.

Marsh must also complete 120 hours of unpaid work.

  • A MAN was jailed for 12 weeks after being found with class A drugs and an offensive weapon.

Kyle Draper, 24, of Broomfield, Benfleet, admitted possession of cocaine and a screwdriver in Vange on October 21.

Basildon Magistrates’ Court handed him a two-week sentence for the small amount of cocaine and ten weeks for having a screwdriver.

He was jailed because it was his second weapon offence within six months.

Draper must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.

  • A CANVEY man has been fined after he was caught in possession of cocaine.

Craig Wood, 19, of Third Walk, admitted possessing the class A drug on the island on January 4.

Magistrates fined him £120 and also ordered him to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

  • A MAN was spared jail after he admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a dog.

Michael Royale, 46, of Station Road, Westcliff, inflicted blunt force trauma to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in Westcliff on July 6.

Southend Magistrates’ Court handed him a 12 weeks suspended prison sentence suspended for 18 months.

Royale was also banned for life from keeping animals as pets.

He was also ordered to pay £300 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

  • DAVID Jones, 41, of Third Avenue, Stanford-le-Hope, admitted drink-driving on January 3.

He was charged with having 62 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the prescribed limit.

Magistrates fined him £520, ordered him to pay a £52 victim surcharge and £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service. He was further banned from driving for 17 months.

  • JAMES Tasker, 20, of Greensted Close, Basildon, admitted taking a vehicle without consent of the owner.

He was charged with taking a black VW Golf on January 17.

Magistrates fined him £200, ordered him to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £85 to the CPS.

  • DAVID Cadge, 25, of Mortar Close, Shoebury, was found guilty of travelling on a train between Prittlewell and Rayleigh without having a valid ticket.

He was fined £30, ordered to pay £5 compensation and a £30 victim surcharge.

He was also ordered to pay £100 court costs.

  • ALFIE Hardman, 18, of Giffords Cross Avenue, Corringham, admitted damaging a £65 cordless phone belonging to Claire Bailey.

The criminal damage took place on January 1 in Stanford-le-Hope. He was handed a 12-month conditional discharge, ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

  • ASHLEY Wellman, 32, of Chadwell Way, Basildon, stole £252 worth of groceries from the BP garage in Eastmayne.

She stole the goods on January 6. Magistrates ordered her to complete a rehabilitation activity requirement, to pay an £85 victim surcharge and £40 costs.

  • SHAUN Stowers, 49, of Long Riding, Basildon, was caught by officers with diamorphine in his possession.

He admitted possessing the class A drug on December 16.

He was discharged conditionally for 12 months and magistrates ordered him to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £50 to the CPS.

  • LEIGH Chadwick, 28, of Kent View Road, Basildon, was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work after he admitted sending an indecent message between December 25 and January 2.
