TO mark Nurses Day- a celebration of the amazing work of our superhero nurses - we are taking a nostalgic look back at nursing at Southend Hospital.
Our gallery show nurses hard at work, and play, from 1939 all the way to 1989.
One of the earliest photos is of Stella Batchelor, a 21-year-old student nurse who was fulfilling her ambition to work in a modern hospital.
Back then trainee nurses were instructed in a variety of disciplines including anatomy, hygiene, physiology, invalid cookery, bandaging and splint padding and the fee for their nursing course cost six guineas.
The gallery also shows nurses at Southend Hospital during the 1950s and 1980s.
