AN anti-knife crime event is taking place in Southend.

On Saturday, police officers, Special Constables and Active Citizens from Southend will be hosting an anti-knife crime event alongside the charity, Only Cowards Carry.

There will also be high-visibility patrols in the high-street throughout the day to deter any anti-social behaviour.

Local organisations such as The Forum and Southend Business Improvements Districts (BID) will be supporting the patrols. Active Citizens will be liaising with the public, handing out information leaflets and discussing the negative consequences of carrying knives or weapons.

The anti-knife crime charity, Only Cowards Carry, will be hosting a table in The Victoria Shopping Centre from 9am to 5pm where it will be deterring people from carrying knives, misusing drugs or alcohol and being involved in gangs.

Inspector Bill Potter, Southend Community Policing Team Inspector, said: “Knives will ruin lives and it is important that everyone understands their obligation and responsibilities to challenge the sales of weapons just as it is important for our communities to understand the dangers, implications and penalties for carrying them.”
