ENGLAND football legend Jimmy Greaves has remarried his ex-wife, Irene, 39 years after they divorced.

The wedding took place last Thursday at St John the Baptist Church in Danbury, Chelmsford.

The couple originally tied the knot in 1958, splitting up in 1977 before reuniting a year later and deciding to remarry last week.

Jimmy’s son, Danny, was also a footballer, plying his trade for Southend United from 1981 to 1984 where he scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for the Shrimpers.

Jimmy, 77, who has been wheelchair-bound since suffering a massive stroke in May 2015, told The Mirror: “I’m delighted to be remarried to Irene.”

Irene, 77, added: “Jim did brilliantly. He was able to say most of what he needed to say and the reverend helped him when he couldn’t.

“It was a lovely day, very poignant and very emotional for the children.

“When we turned around I said, ‘Come on then, husband’, and everyone roared with laughter.”

Following his stroke whilst he was having a cup of tea with Irene, Jimmy was in intensive care for six weeks.

Despite continuous private rehab treatment he is unable to move his legs and is in a wheelchair.

The ex-Spurs striker also feared he would be unable to talk again after losing his speech.

Irene added: “Honestly, we’d never thought about remarrying – as far as we were concerned we were always married.

“But a couple of months ago we decided we were going to do it again, so I don’t know which date to do the anniversary on now.

“I’m probably going to stick to the original March date because next year it will be diamond.

“We got married on a Wednesday first time round.

“We had to because Jim was playing football on Saturdays. I can’t begin to tell you how many weddings I’ve been to on my own.”

Jimmy also played for West Ham, Chelsea and AC Milan and currently sits fourth on the England all-time goal scoring list, behind Wayne Rooney, Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker, scoring 44 goals in 57 appearances.

Irene continued: “He’s still the same as he was, not much different really. I don’t think much will change. He’s well looked after and he loved it when he went to White Hart Lane to see the old stadium and the new one being built, and when he went to the training ground.”
