Startling reports of an out-of-control fire were proven to be a false alarm.
At around 4pm in the afternoon, residents reported of a big blaze that took place near a caravan park.
Residents said they could see and smell the fire close to the Dale Farm site, in Oak Lane, Cray Hill, Basildon.
There were also reports that Oak Lane was sealed off.
A resident has reported seeing a fire truck heading towards the area from Nevendon Road, Wickford.
A resident, Len Gridley, who lives near the site, told the Echo despite the reports he could see no sign of the fire.
He said: "I came back from work at around 7pm. I went out walking my dog and I can't see or smell anything. I didn't hear or see any road blocks in Oak Lane. There was nothing."
Essex Fire & Rescue Service confirmed it was a false alarm from a concerned resident.
A spokesman said: "One fire engine from Billericay and Basildon were dispatched to the scene at 3.52pm.
"We arrived there at 4.11pm and we were stood down because it was a false alarm.
"We left the scene at 4.14pm. There were no road blocks in Oak Lane as claimed by residents."
