Southend Pier has been closed by the council until further notice due to adverse weather conditions.

Storm Eleanor arrived last night and south Essex was hit by strong winds and heavy rainfall throughout.

A council spokesman said: "Southend Pier is closed until further notice today due to high winds. We will update when it re-opens.

"Please accept our apologies if you had planned a visit."

Following the arrival of the storm, the Met Office issued a warning to people in Essex that Storm Eleanor will force delays on public transport and that some bridges, including the Dartford Crossing would close due to the strong winds.
