Work has begun to build new homes on the site of a very popular former Canvey pub.

Two new three-bedroom homes are in the process of being built on the site of the former King Canute pub in Canvey Road, along with the conversion of the first floor of the main pub building into two flats.

The ground floor of the pub is still set to be retained for retail use.

Mark Trew, 55, of Edith Close, who lives behind the King Canute build, said that the ground floor of the pub is expected to become a vets.

He said: “They are building two houses directly behind my house, they have got them up so quickly.

“It is as if they were prebuilt and they were just driving them onto the land.

“The two houses were up within about two days. “They are still keeping the top of the King Canute for flats, which they have been working on for months.”

Mr Trew said that as building work has been going on, the works have been very noisy and have caused issues for the residents living in the road backing onto the pub.

He added that the floorboards in his lounge have begun to move and that his neighbour’s view out the back of their home has been obstructed by the new homes being built.

Mr Trew said: “My view from our house is not as bad as my neighbour because I can look out and see through the fronts of the houses.

“Although, the top floor of the houses do look over my house.”

Mr Trew is a shift worker for the emergency services, and he often works evenings.

He has said the vibrations and noise from the building work has forced him to change where he is sleeping while the work is going on during the day.

Despite the noise and inconvenience the build is causing him and his wife, Sue, Mr Trew is confident the work will make it worthwhile.

He said: “There is a lot of work happening and the main houses being effected are in our road.

“In fairness, it was a bit of an eyesore before, it had turned into a bit of a dumping ground.

“When it is done it will be all good.

“You cannot build houses without noise or vibrations so it will be worth the wait.”
