AN ENGINEERING company has been selected as an official partner for the Year of Engineering 2018 campaign.

The family run Gibbons and Engineering Group, based in Tollesbury, will be partnering with the government scheme to raise the profile of engineering among young people and encourage them to consider engineering as a career.

Gibbons was founded in 1969 and comprises 11 divisions, including electric motors, variable-speed drives, pumps and gearboxes, and related services to manufacturing and production.

The partnership will see Gibbons help promote the variety, creativity and social value of engineering and the difference it can make to people’s lives.

As part of its commitment to the scheme, Gibbons will be welcoming engineering apprentices from Essex companies to its offices and workshops to gain invaluable experience and will host an open day for primary school pupils to visit its workshops and see exactly what electrical and mechanical engineering is all about, with hands-on activities that replicate some off the challenges faced by engineers.

The company also marked National Apprenticeship Week, which ran from March 5 to 9, by interviewing apprentices past and present from across all areas of its business, with the videos published to the Gibbons website and YouTube account.

Director Matthew Gibbons said: “We’re challenging outdated perceptions of the profession as a ‘dirty hands’ job with a number of initiatives. Modern engineering embraces the latest technology, offers tremendous opportunities for progression and can take you all over the world.

“We hope that as a Year of Engineering 2018 partner we can show local young people what a great career it is.”
