Essex Police has confirmed the A13 was closed due to concerns for a woman's welfare.
The A13 was closed in both directions near to the Five Bells Interchange.
A force spokesman said: "We were called to concerns for the welfare of a woman on a bridge above the A13 between Five Bells Interchange and Corringham at around 3pm today.
"We attended and closed the road while the incident was ongoing.
"We have now ensured her safety."
A spokesman from the ambulance service added: "We received a call from our colleagues in the police in regards to concerns for the welfare of a woman on a bridge above the A13 between Five Bells Interchange and Corringham at around 3 pm today (Wednesday, April 11).
"We attended and closed the road while the incident was ongoing.
"We have now ensured her safety.
"We sent an ambulance to the scene but wasn’t needed."
