All the excitement of Billericay's Soapbox Derby is just a week away.

Over the past two years, more than 13,000 people have attended the annual event and it has raised £20,000 for charities.

This year's Soapbox Derby chairman, Les Sheppard said: “With only days to go, everything is in place. Safety for the racers down Thunder Road has been a top priority and we are confident.

"There has been a major ticket-selling drive with banners in key places around the town, Beresford estate agents posting us on sight boards and giving us a £5 donation for every board.

"Members turned out on Saturdays to sell tickets in the high street and we had a wonderful response with many telling us: 'We've bought our tickets, we'll be there' and 'we would not miss it, a great day out'."

It will take place on May 7, with the first race at 9.45am.

With 50 guaranteed entries in all categories – students, Wacky Racers and corporates – the racing is guaranteed.

Kart teams who have delighted and thrilled spectators for the past two years are back in force – including: Killer Heels, Roll Out the Bunting, Black Pearl, Happy Feet, Watch out for The Flintstones and look forward to the battle of the bears – Quilters' Wadey Bear against Buttsbury Bear.

Alongside the derby there will also be a classic car display, traction engine, car simulator, Morris dancers and a renowned local singer on Sun Corner.
