BEFORE you go putting away your planners and diaries following the colossal fun which was the Leigh Folk Festival, you're going to need your calendar again to take note of what is going on across the Southend Festival.

For six weeks, this brand new festival - which has ambitious aspirations to garner a reputation like the world famous Edinburgh Fringe - will see a mass of poetry, art, literature, music and more, take place across the town, starting from this Sunday July 1.

Many of the events you may recognise as they were already in existence, but they will be now held under the Southend Festival umbrella, presented by Southend BID (Business Improvement District) in an attempt to "put the Essex coastal town on the wider cultural map". One such hugely popular event which will now be part of the Southend Festival, is the Southend Comedy Festival, which will be bringing in some nationwide headline acts, including comedian Hal Cruttenden and improvisational funnyman Tony Slattery from TV's Whose Line is it Anyway?

A Southend BID spokesman explained "the brand-new Southend Festival has ambitions to become the 'go-to place’ for some of Britain’s top comedians as they warm-up for the famous Edinburgh Fringe".

Southend BID manager, Alison Dewey, added: “By creating the festival, we hope to raise both the profile of Southend on a regional and national level, whilst also creating an exciting and dynamic showcase for all the incredible, creative people we have living and working in and around Southend.

Echo: Tony Slattery

“We’ve tried to create a programme that really does have something for everyone; from politics to poetry, comedy to child-friendly fun days, I think people really will notice a new buzz and vibrancy around the town centre during the six weeks of the festival.”

The Southend Festival has been born following its involvement last year with the Estuary Fringe Festival, a grass roots community art event led by Southchurch based painter John Bulley. The Southend BID had supported the event in 2017 by backing the Estuary Fringe's Southend Art Trail and Paint Fest events.

This year, the Southend BID spokesman explained the Estuary Fringe Festival had been "absorbed" into the Southend Festival, with events such as the Southend Art Trail taking place again, as well as the newly named Paint Jam (a derivative of Paint Fest), which will see internationally recognised London-based graffiti artist Mr Cenz return to Southend to create one of his signature portraits.

Many of the events held across the six week extravaganza, which goes on until Wednesday August 15, are ticketed separately, with various prices ranging from £2, to £5, to £30 per ticket. However, you can have a chance at winning a "Golden Ticket" which will get you into each ticketed event for free.

Enter via visitsouthend.co.uk/whats-on/the-southend-festival/golden-ticket by 12pm today. One lucky winner will receive two Golden Tickets valid for the named winner and their allocated friend only.

Several "free admission" events are also being held across the six weeks, including a number of live gigs.

Visit visitsouthend.co.uk for all ticket information.
