AN East London school orchestra is tuning up with excitement to get ready to perform in Southend... for some of the young people involved, it will be their first trip to the seaside town.

The Frederick Bremer School is a community school based in Walthamstow.

The young musicians from it, will take to the stage at the Bandstand in Priory Park, Southend, on Wednesday July 4, so it is hoped Southend residents are there to give the young East Londoners a warm welcome.

Danielle Buckley, head of creative arts at the school in Siddeley Road, has organised the tour with Southend Council.

She explained: "The music department of the Frederick Bremer School is a part of the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, a programme set up by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

"The MiSST helps schools from deprived areas, allowing all children access to music with free instruments and free lessons.

"The main focus and purpose of the event is to give the children an opportunity to perform in an outdoor environment, and also give them the experience of touring - something that very few of them would have ever had the opportunity to experience at this stage of their lives and learning.

"Also, it will be a wonderful opportunity for them to explore the historic town of Southend as I am sure that the students that we would like to take to this event, have not had the opportunity to visit before."

She added: "Frederick Bremer School took part in Channel 4’s Educating the East End and viewers witnessed first-hand the unconditional commitment of staff supporting young people, however challenging, to ensure they get the most they can from their education.

"As a partner school of the Music in Secondary Schools Trust since 2014, music has played a significant part in the school’s journey of transformation.

"All students who enter the school in Year 7 learn to play the violin, viola or flute during their class music lesson.

"Those who are keen and motivated to take their music to a higher level are given additional teaching time and from this ensemble, orchestral groups have grown. It is such students that we would be looking to reward and further encourage with this experience."

The performance at the band stand at Priory Park, Victoria Avenue, takes place at 12pm.
