DOZENS of scouts were commended by Bear Grylls after they walked more than 25 miles across Rochford as part of their annual district hike.

60 cub scouts and 25 leaders from the 14 packs of the Crouch Valley District set off from Bramerton Road Church in Hockley and trekked throughout the entire weekend to arrive at the Holy Trinity Church in High Street, Rayleigh.

John Blundell, cub district commissioner, said: “This is one of the most challenging events a Cub Scout, aged eight to 11-years-old will complete.

"It has been recognised by the Scout Association for the unique nature of the weekend and carries a personal commendation from our chief scout, Bear Grylls.”

The hike itself, connected the seven parish churches of Ashingdon, Canewdon, Hawkwell, Hockley, Rayleigh, Rochford and Stambridge.

The children stopped at every point where they learned a piece of history and took in some refreshments.

A spokesman for the group, said: "It was completed under extreme conditions, including hiking overnight, traversing rough terrain, crossing scrubland and even bridging water courses.

"It was physically and mentally exhausting and tested the Cub Scouts ability to work within a team.

"But they all made it and arrived at the Holy Trinity Church, where their parents were all waiting to greet them with applause."

A service was given and the cubs were all presented with a badge and certificate for their achievement.
