FAMILIES rushed to a fire station open day to enjoy all the fun on offer.

Shoebury Fire Station, in the high street, opened it doors to the public to give adults and children alike a look into what it's like being a firefighter.

There were many things to see on the day including fire and rescue demonstrations as well as having a go in the driver's seat of a real fire engine and a virtual reality demonstration of what it's like to be at the scene of a car crash.

Visitors also has the chance to see who could handle the hose the best and see what firefighters do every day in the job.

Specialist vehicles and equipment from other fire stations and from the Essex Fire Museum, Grays, were also in attendance including a specialist water bowser and an aerial ladder platform.

Other attractions included fire-safety demonstrations and facepainting.

Cadets were also on hand to offer refreshments including donuts to everyone.

Fire cadet Leo Bruce, who is stationed at Shoebury, said: "Everyone had a brilliant time at Shoebury Fire Station's Open day. We even had a rare sight of three classic fire engines together - the Dennis Sabre, the Dennis Dagger and the Dennis Rapier altogher side-by-side."

Keen photographer Aaron Chesham said it was fun to see the classic vehicles.

He added: "I had a great day at the fire station open day. It was good to see the old engines there."
