SOUTHEND Council has promised new and safer loos for the seafront after taking action to address crime at two toilet blocks.

The women’s toilets in Lucy Road are set to remain closed following an arson attack on August 13.

Toilets in Pitmans Close will also be demolished after becoming a “magnet” for criminal behaviour.

Councillor James Courtenay, cabinet member for growth, said: “Further toilets are being planned for the seafront area, with plans already in place to remodel the pier entrance to include public toilets, and more plans to provide new toilets at the Pier Head.

“Next on the list to refurbish are the public toilets at East Beach. These works will be undertaken in preparation for the 2019 summer season.”

The council also pointed to the money spent on public conveniences to help improve visits by shoppers and tourists.

Councillor Courtenay said: “We place great importance on public conveniences in and around our borough, which, unlike many local authorities, we provide free-of charge to our residents and visitors.

“Sadly, despite our efforts, the women’s toilets in Lucy Road were senselessly burned down in an arson attack, meaning we have lost these facilities.

“In addition, we have had to take the very difficult decision to remove the toilets in Pitmans Close in Central Southend, after they were repeatedly used for criminal activities – drug-taking, rough-sleeping and anti-social behaviour.

“This decision was not taken lightly, but the facilities needed to be removed to protect the safety of our residents and visitors.

“These events have not deterred us from ensuring there is ample and safe toilet provision in busy areas of the borough.”

Concerns have been raised about the reduced number of facilities.

Cheryl Nevin, Labour councillor for Milton, said: “With two sets now closing, we now have so few toilets open.

“It is an issue particularly for pregnant woman and older people who are coming to the town centre to shop.”
