ISLANDERS celebrated 400 years of a Dutch settlement.

For hundreds of years Canvey’s Dutch Cottage has been a special sight and an event was held to celebrate a very special birthday - its 400th.

The event marked the time Dutch Cottage, Canvey Road, Canvey has stood as a prominent feature on the island.

It took place on Saturday, September 1 and September 2 from 11am until 4pm.

It was hosted by the Benfleet and District Historical Society.

Chairman Jackie Terry, 78, said it a successful event.

She said: "We had two perfect days, the sun shone, the people came, music played, and it was a wonderful atmosphere. The food was good, caterers All Occasions kept the food coming and for those who didn’t venture into marque, the food came out to them. If afternoon tea didn’t suit, Tammi‘s Burger Bar, and Rossi Ice Cream were on hand with alternative treats.

"Many special guests came, including friends and colleagues of councillor Ray Howard MBE who came to help us celebrate.

"Other guests included Roel Van de Ven, from the Netherlands, who opened the event, after Johnny Kremer a Dutchman from Steintec Ltd, gave the welcome.

"Philip Venning OBE, from the Heritage Lottery Fund East of England, said they liked to fund the small places, like our little cottage. They were pleased with the show; put on by Canvey, their bands, Choirs, and the children from Star Studios who put on a lovely display on Saturday and the children from Northwick Park Infant School, who sang beautifully, songs we knew, accompanied by their teachers."
