MAJOR plans for a multi-million pound business park in Southend received a huge boost.

When finished Southend Airport Business Park will boast approximately one million square feet of office space, warehouses and hotel accommodation, as well as an innovation centre for new start-ups.

The first phase of work on a £150million business park was completed in May.

On Friday morning, the South East local enterprise partnership accountability board gave its unanimous support to the Southend Council project.

The council has bid for £14.5 million in funding from the partnership ahead of phase two of the development.

Southend councillor James Courtenay said: "Delighted that Southend Council's Airport Business Park received unanimous support from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership Accountability Board this morning.

"Massive (£31m in total) project supporting business, attracting new investment and creating high quality job opportunities locally."

The business park is being built next to the airport at Cherry Orchard Way.

It is hoped the project, which is a joint venture between Henry Boot Developments and Southend Borough Council, will create 5,000 jobs for the area.
