DOZENS of residents could be in danger after a care home already being investigated by police following two deaths was declared unsafe.

A ban was put on Elizabeth House taking in more residents as a report from the Care Quality Commission revealed 100 people still live there.

The care home off Benfleet Road, Hadleigh was rated inadequate following a five day emergency assessment.

It received the lowest possible rating for safety, leadership, care and requires improvement to be effective.

The home has been placed in special measures while police continue to look into the deaths of a 90-year-old woman and 79-year-old man.

The deaths themselves are not being treated as suspicious but allegations of potential negligence prior to their deaths is being investigated.

The home is operated by Runwood Homes who have dozens of care homes across the country including Silvanna Court in Wickford and Rosedale Court in Rayleigh.

The report, published on Thursday, stated: “We took urgent action to restrict admissions to the service and placed several conditions on the provider’s registration because we were concerned about people’s immediate safety.

“The overall rating for this service is ‘inadequate’ and the service is therefore in special measures.”

The report continues: “Risks were not suitably managed or mitigated to ensure people’s safety and wellbeing.

“Some people did not receive their prescribed medication as they should.”

In one case staff failed to administer pain relief treatment for a resident 48 consecutive times.

The inspectors found people were being supported to get up and go to bed when the staff wanted to help them and not when the residents wanted to rest.

The company claimed changes have been made.

The inspection took place in late July and early August.

A spokesman for Runwood Homes said: “Elizabeth House has recently undergone some managerial changes and the home continues to work positively in partnership with all key stakeholders to uphold the quality care delivered within the service to all of our residents.

“This has been recognised by visiting professionals and residents alike, which is of course our ultimate aim.”
