DOZENS of data security breaches at Southend Council have been investigated.

During the 12 months between May 2017 and May 2018 the council launched 41 investigations most of which involved details being sent to the wrong the person.

On 20 occasions the investigations were confirmed as security breaches and were referred to senior officers.

However none were considered serious enough to need a second investigation by the Information Commissioner.

Cases are referred if an individual’s rights have been infringed.

Leader John Lamb said: “The most common cause of breaches iwas information sent to the wrong recipient by letter or e-mail.

“All data security incidents are of concern to the council and are assessed for their likely impact. Incidents are also analysed to identify lessons to be learned, training needs and any changes to ways of working which might be needed.”
