HERE are some more never-before-seen photos from our archives.

These vintage pics all come from 1930 and show what was happening across Southend during that year.

Among the images show the building of a new church for Leigh - St Margaret’s in Lime Avenue. Also in the gallery is the 1930 team shot for Southend United FC, members of the West Leigh Operatic Society in action and also a concert taking place at Southend’s once grand Floral Hall (formerly known as Happy Valley).

The hall got its name due to the fact it hosted regular flower shows as well as concert parties, such as the famous Flor-de-Rols troupe who are pictured in the gallery. The Floral Hall would remain popular until the tragic events of Saturday August 14, 1937, when a devastating fire broke out and gutted the building.

Another photo shows Colonel and Mrs Albert Cox, who at the time were known as the ‘famous midget bridal couple’. They are pictured at the 1930’s mayor’s summer garden party in Priory Park, alongside the mayor and mayoress. For some time Mr and Mrs Cox worked at the Kursaal as part of the venue’s ‘midget mansion’ attraction.

Sports-wise, this year saw an epic darts match taking place in the town. Spectators galore cheered as the Eagle Darts Club of Shoeburyness beat the Middleton Dart Club in the final of the SM Watkins Shield. The event was held at the Criterion Hotel in Marine Parade and people would be talking about it for weeks to come.
