A SOUTH Essex College sport student has won a prestigious national golfing tournament.

Sophie Wheeler, who studies on the college’s Golf Academy course, came first in the England Girls’ County Champion of Champions competition.

She completed the course at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire in one-over-par for 36 holes.

She has now been selected for England 18’s regional squad.

Sophie, 16, from Billericay, said: “This one meant a lot, especially as my dad caddied for me.

“I played well in practice and I mapped out where I needed to be and where not to miss.”

Aaron Quinn, head of the college’s golf academy, said: “This tournament win is huge for Sophie and gives her the national recognition she deserves.”
