A “PSYCHO” who stabbed a former pal multiple times in broad daylight has been told to expect a long jail sentence.

Gary Cogman, 62, of Haven Road, Canvey, was found guilty by a jury of wounding with intent following a knife point attack at the island’s Smallgains Marina.

During the trial, the court heard how Cogman repeatedly stabbed his former friend Matthew Storer on April 21 in a dispute about a woman who Mr Storer had visited at the marina.

He suffered stab wounds to his shoulder and chest as well as defensive wounds on his arms and hands.

Mr Storer, 43, was airlifted to hospital where he was treated for his injuries, some of which were serious enough to require surgery.

During the attack, Mr Storer, who described Cogman as a “psycho” fell back off the jetty at the marina, at which he point he lost consciousness.

After being arrested, Cogman was interviewed and told investigators Mr Storer had been storming towards him and looked confrontational.

But the jury found Cogman unanimously guilty after less than a day of deliberation.

It was argued that Cogman acted in self-defence, but prosecuting Robin Griffiths questioned whether the incident represented “reasonable force”.

Cogman, who appeared with his long grey hair tied in a pony tail, wearing a prison-issued tracksuit and holding one crutch, remained emotionless as the judge told him to “expect a substantial custodial sentence”.

Judge Ian Graham adjourned sentencing until a pre-sentence report was completed.

He told the attacker: “You have been convicted by the jury of the offence of wounding with intent; there is no doubt that is a very serious offence.

“I am going to adjourn sentencing so there can be a pre-sentence report to deal with the issue of dangerousness and because your lawyer wants to seek medical evidence.

“You should expect a substantial custodial sentence and in the mean time you will remain in custody.”

Sentencing will take place at Basildon Crown Court on November 23.
