HARRY Branch was a happy man after helping Southend Saxons secure their first win of the season.

Southend - who had kicked off the London One North campaign with three successive defeats - saw off Amersham & Chiltern 29-7 at Warners Bridge.

And Branch was delighted to get the Saxons’ campaign up and running.

“The game at the weekend was really good to be a part of,” said Branch.

“Training during the week was brilliant from both squads and that made the result at the weekend possible.”

Southend triumphed at the weekend thanks to two more tries from winger Sam Hampson, who has enjoyed a prolific start to the season.

Hampson, who signed in the summer, has now touched down six times in four outings and his latest brace ensured a welcome win for Saxons.

Fraser Banks and the experienced Andrew McClintock - who came back to the club in the summer - also touched down while Tom Ramsey added nine points with the boot.

And Branch is now hoping the win will kick-start Southend’s season.

“Getting the result at the weekend has made all the difference and we will be pushing forward with the next run of games and putting out further professional performances to build on it now,” said Branch.

“But I want us to continue to work hard as a squad in training and not let this result be our defining factor.

“We have a brilliant squad who all have the same goal and our group will only be looking to get better now.”

The victory saw Southend move up to 10th in the 14 team table.

And Branch was also keen to praise Jake Tottman’s part in the win.

“I thought Jake had a fantastic debut performance,” said the scrum-half.

“He definitely deserves a mention for how he played.”

Southend will now be hoping to make it two victories in succession when they head to seventh-placed Old Priorians this weekend.
