GREAT Wakering Rovers are more than capable of beating Canvey Island tonight.

That is the opinion of manager Garry Kimble, having watched his side push National League South side Wealdstone in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Wakering lost 2-0 but frustrated the Stones for large parts. And Kimble says his side can beat Canvey in the Isthmian North if they put in a similar display.

“The games don’t get any easier,” said Kimble. “They are one of the favourites to go up this year and we need to perform and, if we do, I think we can get a result.

“It’s down to the players now but we can get at least a point and maybe more.”

Kimble also believes his side were unfortunate not to take the lead in the FA Cup clash on Saturday, despite there being two divisions between the teams.

“We could have gone in a few goals up,” he said. “The players were a credit to the club. Their manager said how good we were and I was very pleased with what I saw.

“I can’t pick out a man of the match. They all did very well.”

Ollie Woodhouse (shin) should return for Wakering tonight.

Meanwhile, Isthmian North table-toppers Basildon United will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent winning record when Heybridge Swifts visit the Ho Ho Stadium this evening.

The Bees go into the encounter having come out on top in an eight goal thriller at Witham Town last time out.

But Marc Harrison, who led Basildon to promotion from the Essex Senior League in his first season in charge, believes Heybridge will be the league leaders’ biggest test so far.

Harrison, who has no injury concerns going into the clash, said: “Heybridge will be our biggest test so far, absolutely.

“You have to respect what they did last season, but their line-ups have been quite inconsistent and they are finding it hard with injuries at the moment.

“It will be an interesting game and being at home is a bit of a leveller as well, but if we play to our strengths then we can win.”
