A burglar who was caught after leaving a water bottle covered with his DNA behind during a break-in has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Sean Cawthray broke in to a property in Windmill Hill, Tiptree, between 8am and 9.30am on Friday, July 7.

Whilst inside, he stole items including clothing and jewellery which were worth more than £1,000.

Cawthray, 47, was disturbed by the home owner as he left the property.

He held up a kitchen knife before making off into the nearby woods.

The victim discovered a water bottle at the scene which was not there beforehand and DNA found on it was later identified as belonging to Cawthray.

Essex Police interviewed Cawthray, who is currently serving at HMP Leicester, Welford Road, Leicester, in prison and he was subsequently reported for the court process.

At Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday, September 24, he pleaded guilty to burglary and possession of a bladed article in a public place. A charge of aggravated burglary will lie on file.

Cawthray was sentenced to 18 months for burglary and 12 months for possession of a bladed article with the sentences to run concurrently.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Danielle Markoutsis, from Colchester CID, said: “Sean Cawthray has little respect for other people’s property.

“He had the audacity to break into the victim’s home in broad daylight and seemingly had few reservations about taking items which had a great monetary and sentimental value.

“He did at least admit his crimes and I hope this sentence brings some solace to the victim.”
