RESIDENTS and businesses were able to share their concerns about antisocial behaviour and other crimes during a police operation.

The operation, named Op Hamlet, took place in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff, and saw hundreds of people in the local community share their concerns with Southend Community Safety Partnership (SCSP), made up of police, the council and other agencies.

The operation saw police officers speak to about 100 residents about their crime concerns in the local area.

Inspector Ian Hughes, of the Southend Community Policing Team, gave a speech to residents, businesses and other members of the community during the operation.

He spoke passionately about the impact the operation could have on Southend.

He said: ““We had a fantastic day supporting the residents, retailers and visitors of Hamlet Court Road and the surrounding area.

“We know the area has lots of challenges and it is so important that the community knows we are here for them.

“We remain committed to building on what is already an incredibly strong community spirit and it was great to see so many people.

“By the end of the day, we had spoken to around 100 residents, including a number of retailers and licensed premises.

“We are planning a number of these days in other areas of the borough, so keep an eye out and please join us on the next one.”

More than 30 partner agencies held stalls in the Havens building, now run by Age Concern, offering advice, support and information.

The operation has followed on from similar days that were held in York Road and Southend high street.

Mark Flewitt, Southend’s councillor for public protection said the event was a real “eye opener” for him.

He said: “It was a very successful day and it truly gave me an image of what the residents are experiencing in Hamlet Court Road, so it was a great event.”
