A RUNNER who has raised more than £7,000 for charity by competing in weekly races has been nominated for a Pride of Britain award.

Peter Redwood-Smith, 24, of Daws Heath Road, Rayleigh, only took up running a year ago in a bid to overcome mental health issues.

He set himself the challenge of running 52 races in 52 weeks and has almost completed the mammoth task with just four races left to go.

His fundraising efforts have not gone unnoticed and Peter has been nominated for a Pride of Britain award. He made it through to the final four in the prestigious competition.

The former retail worker said: “I felt humbled, proud and surprised to have been nominated for the award.

“I only started running last year to help with anxiety, depression and to raise money for charity.

“I have never run for self-gain, profit or publicity, just to help others, inspire others and to push myself to become a better man.

“I’m proud of what I have accomplished and overcome, although there are lots of amazing people across the country equally deserving of the recognition.”

Peter’s challenge has seen him compete in some epic races including a 52.4 mile race across the South Downs while carrying a 12kg backpack. While normally he races in shorts and T-shirt, Peter has donned fancy dress including Deadpool and Freddie Kruger costumes and even in a mankini.

He has raised more than £7,000 for various charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital and Wild Wildlife Fund.

Unfortunately, Peter did not win the award but he has set his sights on other running challenges.

He added: “Thanks to everyone that has nominated me, sponsored me and sent me messages of encouragement throughout my journey. I’m towards the end of my challenge but I have some pretty exciting things in the pipeline for the future.”
