OFFICERS were called to reports of a gunman near a care home.

Police were called to reports of a gunman spotted in various locations including Pantile Avenue, Southend, Short Street and also the area of Norwich Avenue and Cluny Square. 

Officers attended searched and it was an ornamental antique gun and that it nobody was threatened.

It was reported that Cumberlege Intermediate Care Centre was on lock down.

The care home declined chance to comment.

A spokesman for Essex Police: "We received several reports of a man walking along the road with what appeared to be an antique ornamental rifle. 

"The first report was made just after 11.55am and officers who attended conducted an extensive area search. 

"The man was not found and since then no further sightings have been reported, although officers are continuing to make enquiries. 

"The man was spotted in the area of The Range store in Short Street and also the area of Norwich Avenue and Cluny Square. 

"He was described as between 30 and 40 years old, at least 5ft 6ins tall and was of slim build. He was wearing a dark blue hoody, jogging bottoms and a grey flat cap. 

"The rifle was not pointed at anyone and no threats were made. 
"There is nothing to currently indicate that the man poses any threat. 
"At the time of the reports, officers gave safety advice to residents and businesses as a "precautionary measure. 

"Enquiries are ongoing."
